Michelle Malkin has an email posted from the University of Washington Foundation, which, in the aftermath of the ignorant comments by some students towards Greg Boyington, has set up a scholarship fund in the name of Lt. Col Boyington to benefit former Marines and the children of Marines.
So far so good. But, is the UW Foundation the way to go with this worthy cause? It is UW that has produced the history illiterate students in question. It is at UW that this type of "thought" is respected, and as it appears, common. The students involved lack a basic knowledge of WWII and the stakes involved. I am willing to bet that they are against the War in Iraq and unable to separate their feelings towards it and WWII, lumping them all together. The students involved believe in a moral equivalency in which killing someone in defense of your homeland and it's citizenry is the same as shooting someone on the street in cold blood. Frankly, the "thinking" in this instance is quite juvenile. And UW is supposed to be a public Ivy.
Given this, would it make more sense to support a scholarship fund that is separate from UW? Certainly it would be harder to administrate. But would independence from the university ensure the money is used properly and that the recipients are honored rather than scorned as clearly some of these students scorn those serving as Marines?
What do YOU think?
