It Was All About Oil?

For all those Mensa members on the Left, if the war in Iraq was all about oil, then why does it cost so much now? And if we really only wanted the oil, why not just put troops in the oil fields, along the pipelines and harbor facilities and let the rest of the country fend for itself?
