The Opinionator clan makes it's home in Apex, NC. On Thursday night at 1030pm, we had a fire at a chemical storage facility run by Environmental Quality Company. The result was an evacuation of much of Apex after concerns about escaping chemical fumes, especially Chlorine gas. We were called at 1230am Friday by our neighbor alerting us to the news. As it turns out, we live less than a mile from the EQ facility. It was time to make tracks. We made a call to a friend in neighboring Cary, NC to find a place to stay, grabbed some clothes, medicines, etc and made it out of the house by 1am. We were able to return by mid-morning Saturday and all worked out for the best.
First of all, thanks are in order. Thanks to our neighbors who called us and everyone in our cul-de-sac as soon as they heard about the fire and explosions from their son who had seen the live reports on the Raleigh television stations. Second, thanksto the members of the synagogue that also called us, even as we were on the phone with our neighbor, to warn us and offer shelter. To the several others that called to offer shelter, including members of the synagogue and friends. Thanks to the Raleigh JCC and Cary Academy community that did the same. Thanks to the firefighters from Apex, Raleigh and the rest of the surrounding area. Thanks to the Apex PD as well. And thanks especially to our friends that put the five of us up for two days. Thanks again to all of you. We are thankful to have friends like all of you.
More later. Suffice it to say, when your hometown makes the national news, that is not necessarily a good thing. For now, I will simply enjoy being home again!
