Dear Senator Burr,
It is my understanding that you are considering voting for the Immigration Bill. I urge you not to do so. As a native of San Diego, California, I have seen the devastation that wholesale illegal immigration brings: schools overcrowded and overwhelmed, hospitals forced to close down due to illegal's using the emergency rooms as primary care and not being able to pay for it, job loss and low wages. My uncle lost his plumbing business and my cousin his brick mason business as they could not compete on price for jobs with those using illegal aliens they were paying low wages to; usually under the table in cash. Meanwhile, they were paying real wages and taxes. They are no longer in California. While working construction in the summers, I found I could make no more than $7.50 an hour as the illegals would work for $5-6 an hour. I was told the only reason I was hired at my higher wage was that they needed an English speaker on the crew. Is this what you envision for North Carolina or anywhere in the USA for that matter? If you doubt anything I am saying, please talk to Duncan Hunter or Brian Bilbray, my former congressmen. Or better yet, go to San Diego, and check it out for yourself. Whatever you do, I urge you to reconsider your vote for this bill. It is bad for all involved. Senator Dole is right on this issue, and as a Republican and someone who has seen the devastation of illegal immigration firsthand, I urge you to do the right thing as well and vote NO!
