By now most of the civilized world knows that John McCain has selected Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska to be his Vice Presidential nominee. Already, Obama supporters have attacked her as inexperienced. This is truly ironic given that Obama is a first term Senator while Palin is a first term Governor. With a straight face his campaign is suggesting that Governor Palin is not experienced enough to be Vice President where she MIGHT have to become President but Obama is experienced enough to actually BE President. Victor Davis Hansen says it quite well,
"We are supposed to believe that a first- term Alaskan governor is less qualified for the second spot than a first-term Illinois Senator is for
the Presidency—who once again just announced to the nation that he is
ready to invade nuclear Islamic Pakistan to get bin Laden, who wanted
all troops out of Iraq by March 2008, and who once dismissed Iran as a
small threat. Next in their wisdom they will go after Gov. Palin's
husband—and therein re-invite comparison with Michelle's wise
declarations."
Democrat, and Alaska native, Kirsten Powers says,
The more Democrats complain about this, the more Republicans can turn
it on them and say, "If you are so concerned about the amount of
experience of the vice president, what about the top of your ticket?" (Bonus: Take a look at comments on Powers' article. It is already filled with nasty comments about the appropriateness of Palin's attire in photographs. The Obama types learned nothing from their treatment of Hillary Clinton)
As Senator, you are in charge of....your office and budget. You are one of 100. Your job is to represent your constituents. However, an executive position it is not. And Senator is a position that leaves plenty of time to run for President. Which is what Obama has been doing since he had a mere 140 days in office.
As Governor, you are in that position 24/7. Governor Palin is the Commander in Chief of the Alaska Air and Army National Guard and all the agencies report up to her. Whether it is public safety (state police), Fisheries, energy or any other major agency, eventually it all stops on the Governor's, and yes, the Mayor's desk.
To put it bluntly, I prefer my foreign policy experience at the TOP of the ticket, not the BOTTOM.
